Russian Diesel Tanker Set to Depart for US Amid Controversial Trump Deal

A Russian diesel tanker is scheduled to leave Saint‑Petersburg for the United States on 22 October 2026, marking the first shipment under a US‑Russia diesel delivery agreement announced by Donald Trump earlier this month.

The agreement, unveiled by Trump in early October, lifts sanctions on diesel exports and has drawn sharp criticism from Kyiv and its Western allies, who say it undermines sanctions pressure on Moscow.

Russian Energy Deputy Minister Alexandre Novak confirmed the tanker’s departure, saying it demonstrates growing economic cooperation between Moscow and Washington and hints at broader possibilities for future collaboration.

Meanwhile, Steve Witkoff, a Trump emissary, met Vladimir Putin in Saint‑Petersburg on 21 October, presenting documents outlining peace‑agreement ideas. Witkoff, who visited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Oslo on 20 October, said the talks aim to restart trilateral negotiations involving Russia, Ukraine and the United States.

"We brought some documents, these are ideas for a peace agreement you can read at your convenience," Witkoff told Putin, signalling an attempt to revive diplomatic efforts even as the diesel deal proceeds.
