Sahrawi Unity Marked on 51st Anniversary Amid Calls for Self‑Determination

Algerian‑based Sahrawi Ambassador Khatri Adouh Khatri used a ceremony at Algiers' Moufdi‑Zakaria Cultural Palace on Sunday to mark the 51st anniversary of Sahrawi national unity, stressing that the United Nations continues to treat Western Sahara as a decolonisation issue. He cited the UN General Assembly's Fourth Committee reaffirming the legal framework that underpins the Sahrawi people's right to self‑determination and independence.

Khatri warned that Morocco's occupation seeks to erode Sahrawi cohesion through repression, financial inducements and disinformation, but that the Front Polisario, institutional symbols and popular solidarity remain "essential pillars" of the national struggle. He said the anniversary highlights the resilience built over decades of resistance and sacrifice.

Vice‑President of the Sahrawi National Council Salah Rekik described the day as a turning point, noting that unity has thwarted Moroccan attempts to divide the people and undermine their national will. He added that Morocco's attempts to impose a fait‑accompli have no legal basis under international law.

Representatives of the Algerian solidarity organisations echoed the message. Yarfaa Ahmed Abdel Hakim of the Sahrawi Popular National Assembly called the event a reminder of the sacrifices made for freedom, while Saïd Ayachi, head of the Algerian Committee for Solidarity with the Sahrawi People, insisted that any lasting solution must involve a genuine self‑determination referendum for the Sahrawi people.

Nader El‑Kaissi, political representative of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, linked the Sahrawi cause with the Palestinian struggle, urging solidarity between the two peoples in their shared fight for liberty and national rights.
