Syria summoned Jordanian ambassador Soufiane al‑Qudah on Wednesday, delivering a protest note after Jordanian airstrikes on Deraa province killed several civilians, including children. The strikes, carried out on Monday 26 October, were claimed by Jordan to target terrorist sites.
Damascus said the attacks hit civilian locations, causing multiple deaths and injuries, and announced on Wednesday the reopening of the Nassib border post with Jordan, which had been closed after the strikes.
Jordan defended the operation as retaliation for an attack on a church in Kerak governorate on Friday 24 October, asserting the strikes were a legitimate response to terrorism. The Syrian side reported seven fatalities in border towns following the Monday attacks.
Both capitals expressed a willingness to maintain good relations on Tuesday 27 October, despite the heightened tensions.
