Morocco and the United Arab Emirates vote against lifting US sanctions on Cuba
The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution on 28 October 2026 calling for an end to the United States economic, commercial and financial embargo on Cuba. The measure passed with 130 votes in favour, 17 against and 25 abstentions.
Morocco and the United Arab Emirates were the only Arab countries to vote against the resolution, arguing that the embargo should be maintained. The United States, under President Donald Trump, has tightened the embargo since his return to office, intensifying restrictions on trade and finance.
Cuba is reported to be facing near‑famine conditions as a result of the prolonged embargo, according to United Nations officials. The Trump administration has repeatedly threatened to occupy Cuban territory and seize Cuban assets in response to criticism of the policy.
The resolution does not bind the United States but signals broad international opposition to the embargo and adds pressure on Washington to reconsider its stance. The United Nations will monitor the situation and report on any further developments.
