The US State Department ordered non‑essential embassy staff and their families to leave Riyadh on Thursday, citing recent security incidents in Saudi Arabia. The directive, announced on Wednesday 21 October, applies only to personnel in Saudi Arabia and does not affect US diplomats in the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Qatar or Bahrain. "The safety and security of our personnel and their families remains our top priority," State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said.
On Wednesday night a drone strike hit the Chaybah oil field, killing a Filipino and a Nepalese worker and wounding Pakistani and Indian nationals, according to the Saudi Ministry of Energy. The same night an attack on Dammam International Airport killed one person and injured eight, the Saudi General Civil Aviation Authority reported. Saudi coalition spokesperson Turki al‑Malki said four drones were intercepted and destroyed, a fifth was intercepted, and a sixth was intercepted, all launched by the Houthi militia.
Houthi spokesperson Yahya Saree denied any deep‑territory operations inside Saudi Arabia on Wednesday. Explosions were also heard in Iran’s Hormozgan province near Karpan, Sirik, though the cause remains unknown. US‑Iran tensions remain low, with no recent hostilities reported this month.
