US Vice President Vance Sends Letter to Iran to Revive Talks Ahead of Midterms

US Vice President JD Vance sent a letter to Mohsen Rezaï, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, seeking to restart diplomatic negotiations and avoid new US strikes.

The outreach came at the request of President Donald Trump, who later denied initiating it. Trump has warned he could order a brief, intense attack on Iran after the US midterm elections on 3 November.

Washington has also asked Gulf states to prepare for a possible short, intense military campaign after the midterms. Since early September, the two sides have avoided major ground attacks, limiting the conflict to naval engagements as the US maintains a blockade of Iranian ports.

Rezaï, 71, who led the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps for the longest period in the 1980s and 1990s, is the letter’s recipient. The correspondence aims to open a diplomatic channel that could ease tensions and prevent escalation of the naval standoff.
