Xi Jinping called for maximum rescue efforts following a 7.0‑magnitude quake that struck Baqing district, Tibet, at 22:33 local time on Thursday, killing at least 16 people and injuring 76.
The tremor, centred at an altitude above 4,500 m, caused more than 300 houses to collapse or be damaged in a sparsely populated, agriculture‑ and livestock‑dependent area. Hundreds of firefighters, rescuers, police and over 300 soldiers were deployed to the scene.
The army employed aerial assets, including a drone, for reconnaissance of the affected zone. Eleven patients were classified as severely injured.
Temperatures fell to 5°C during the day and -6°C at night, with localized snowfall adding to the challenges faced by rescue teams.
Authorities continue to assess damage and provide assistance as the rescue operation proceeds.
